Why Consignment? Why Buy Used?

Consignment allows everyone involved to get good value and buying used helps the world in so many ways.

Before I started my little consignment shop, thrifting and buying used was a normal part of my shopping. But when it came to my outdoor gear, I always bought new because digging through Savers or Goodwill for a specific item (like a backpack) was impossible. Trying to get through the online market places was even more tedious. So, I started this shop so we have a place to shop for outdoor used gear in one place. Plus, buying second-hand is uniquely beneficial for outdoor gear. Here are three reasons you should consign your gear and buy used.

We make it easy for you.

Ever try selling something online? It can be a hassle! First, you have to do all the work, which includes taking pictures and then posting on a market place (or multiple market places). Then you receive random messages that start with “is the item available?” and then no follow-up from the would-be-buyer. When someone is interested and wants to see the item in person, you have to meet a stranger at your home or another location. If you are willing to ship the item, you have to deal with all of the logistics. Garage sales are a little easier, just put you items out on your lawn and put up a sign, but you often only get a fraction of the price of the original item.

Consignment does the work for you. Bring your items in (which is the hardest part) and if your items are accepted, then the shop takes it from there. We handle pricing the item, promoting it, taxes and we even include liability waivers for certain items (like bikes).

Consigning and Buying Used Helps the Environment.

Let’s talk textile waste. It is a mouthful, but it is garbage made up of clothes, shoes, backpacks, etc. In 2018, it is estimated that 17 million tons of this type of waste was generated in the United States. The average person throws away 70 lbs of clothes and other textiles in an average year. Thankfully, reusing and repurposing textiles helps with this. Which is one of the main reasons why we started a consignment shop for outdoor gear. Not only does it help keep things out of landfills, outdoor gear is so often durable and lasts a long time when taken care of! It makes sense to re-home our gear and pass it on for future adventures.

Get a Good Deal.

Shopping for outdoor gear can put a real dent in your wallet. Because the gear we use is specific for our adventures and often keeps us safe (and warm), it needs to be made well and endure some extreme conditions. This of course comes at a price. Such prices can be a barrier for those trying to get into outdoor recreation or wear down even seasoned outdoor enthusiast. Shopping second-hand can help with this and make our hobbies more affordable.
